One Team

What My Team Continues to Teach Me

As a business owner, I make decisions every single day. But the truth is, the people who teach me the most are the members of my own team.

Until recently, our visiting nursing team at Moana was supporting a client in the terminal stage of life. It was an incredibly important time for both the client and their family, but it also placed significant emotional and physical demands on the staff involved.

During that period, I told everyone, “Let’s support one another and work together as a team.”

I meant every word.

But looking back now, I realize that simply saying those words wasn’t enough.

Trusting people is essential. However, there is a difference between trusting your team and leaving everything in their hands.

Ironically, the people with the strongest sense of responsibility are often the least likely to ask for help. They stay silent, carry the weight themselves, and continue doing their best because they don’t want to let anyone down.

As their leader, I should have looked more closely.

Could I have reviewed everyone’s workload more carefully? Could I have checked in with each individual more often? Was there someone quietly struggling? Could we have created a stronger support system and shared the responsibility more effectively?

These are the questions I keep asking myself.

Leadership isn’t simply about telling people to help each other.

It’s about creating an environment where helping one another becomes natural.

It’s about noticing the signs before someone has to say, “I need help.”

Sometimes the most important messages aren’t spoken. They appear in a person’s expression, their energy, or the subtle changes in their daily behavior. As leaders, we must learn to see those signs.

No organization succeeds because of one person.

Our clients receive the best care because dedicated professionals show up every day. My responsibility is to build a workplace where those professionals are supported just as wholeheartedly as they support others.

This experience reminded me that leadership is a continuous journey of learning.

Even as a CEO, my education is far from over. In many ways, my greatest teachers are the people I have the privilege of leading.

I want to take this lesson forward—not just as a reflection, but as a commitment.

To build a team where people naturally notice each other’s struggles.

Where asking for help is welcomed.

Where support comes before burnout.

To me, One Team doesn’t simply mean moving in the same direction.

It means noticing when someone beside you needs a hand—and reaching out before they have to ask.

That is the kind of team I want us to become.
