Trust and Credibility: They Are Not the Same
The other day, I had the opportunity to sit down with H, a care coordinator, and we talked about work, life, and many other topics. During our conversation, one idea stayed with me long after we said goodbye.
“Trust and credibility are not the same.”
It sounds simple, but the more I thought about it, the more meaningful it became.
Credibility is built on the past.
It comes from keeping your promises, being on time, taking responsibility, and consistently doing what you say you will do.
These everyday actions accumulate over time, allowing others to say, “I know I can count on that person.”
Trust, however, is about the future.
It’s when someone says:
“I want to work with you.”
“I’d like you to take care of this.”
“I believe you can make it happen.”
Trust is not simply recognition of what you’ve already done—it’s confidence in what you are capable of doing next.
That perspective truly resonated with me.
In healthcare and rehabilitation, we are entrusted with something incredibly valuable: people’s lives, hopes, and daily well-being. Every interaction with our patients, their families, and our colleagues is built on relationships. Those relationships don’t begin with trust—they begin with credibility.
Trust cannot be demanded.
It is earned, one small action at a time.
Keeping promises.
Considering another person’s perspective.
Offering a helping hand to a teammate who needs support.
Doing the right thing, even when no one is watching.
These ordinary actions may seem small, but together they create extraordinary trust.
I’m grateful to H for sharing this insight with me.
As we continue to grow as a team, I hope we never stop building credibility through our daily actions, so that we can earn the lasting trust of our patients, their families, our community partners, and one another.
Because in the end, credibility is what we build today—and trust is the future that others are willing to place in our hands.
