The 87th Teppeikai

People, Leadership, and Staying Strong

I recently had the opportunity to attend the 87th Teppeikai.

As always, it was a great evening filled with conversations, ideas, and connections with fellow business owners from different industries.

This time, I had a particularly passionate conversation with President T about one of the most important topics in any organization:

People. And hiring.

As a business owner, I find myself thinking about people more and more.

Who do we want to work with?

What kind of environment allows people to bring out their strengths?

How can we help people grow after they join us?

And perhaps the biggest question of all—

What kind of people do we really need to build the company we want to become?

Hiring is often seen as simply filling a vacancy.

But I don’t think it should be only about numbers.

It should be about meeting someone and thinking,

“I want to build something together with this person.”

That is the kind of relationship I want to create at REHANOWA.

We talked about all of this with T for a long time.

It was one of those conversations where you lose track of time because the topic is simply too important.

And then, another moment from the evening stayed with me.

A senior business owner I deeply respect, President F, gave me a simple piece of advice:

“As a business owner, no matter what happens, you must never let your heart break.”

Those words hit me.

Running a company is not always easy.

There are moments when things don’t go as planned.

Moments when you question your decisions.

Moments when you feel tired, uncertain, or even close to giving up.

But as a leader, I believe we have a responsibility to keep moving forward.

That doesn’t mean we have to pretend we’re strong all the time.

We can ask for help.

We can talk to others.

We can admit that we’re struggling.

We can even lose our way for a moment.

But eventually, we have to look forward again.

Because when the leader stops moving, the organization feels it.

And when the leader keeps moving forward, even one small step at a time, the people around them can keep moving too.

REHANOWA is still a young company.

There is so much more to learn.

People.
Hiring.
Leadership.
Organization.
Management.

We are still figuring things out.

But that’s exactly why I am grateful for opportunities like Teppeikai.

Conversations with other leaders remind me that none of us has all the answers.

We learn from each other.

We challenge each other.

And sometimes, a single sentence from someone we respect can stay with us long after the conversation ends.

This time, I walked away thinking about three things:

People matter.

Great companies are built together.

And leaders must keep moving forward.

Thank you, President T, for the passionate conversation about people and hiring.

And thank you, President F, for those words that I will carry with me.

The 87th Teppeikai gave me another opportunity to reflect on what it means to be a leader.

Now, it’s time to take those lessons back to REHANOWA.

One step at a time.

Keep moving forward.
