Reflections at 40: The Value of Lifelong Friends

The other day, I had the chance to catch up with a group of close friends from my college days at Ryokuseikan.

Life has taken each of us in different directions. We all have careers, families, and responsibilities now, so finding a day that worked for everyone wasn’t easy. That made this reunion even more special.

Before we met, I wondered what we would talk about after all these years.

As it turned out, I didn’t need to worry at all.

The moment we saw each other, it felt like no time had passed.

We laughed over silly jokes, shared unforgettable memories from our student days, and kept saying, “Do you remember when that happened?” One story led to another, and before we knew it, hours had gone by.

Back then, we saw each other almost every day.

None of us spent much time thinking about the future. We were simply enjoying life, one day at a time.

Now, somehow, we’ve all reached the milestone of turning forty.

Some of us have become business owners. Others are raising families or pursuing different careers.

We’ve all taken different paths, and each of us carries more responsibility than we did back then.

But when we get together, none of those titles matter.

We’re just friends.

Listening to everyone’s stories reminded me that no one’s journey has been perfect.

Behind every smile were challenges, setbacks, moments of uncertainty, and lessons learned.

What inspired me most was that we could laugh about many of those difficult moments now.

It made me realize just how much we’ve all grown.

People often say that turning forty is the halfway point of life.

Personally, I don’t see it that way.

To me, it feels like a new beginning.

There are still so many things I want to accomplish, both personally and through my company. There are new challenges waiting, new goals to pursue, and new dreams to build.

But this reunion reminded me of something even more important.

No matter how busy life becomes or how hard we work, nothing is more valuable than genuine human connections.

Spending time with lifelong friends reminds us where we came from.

Having people you can laugh with without pretending to be someone else is a gift.

Having friends who can pick up a conversation as if you had seen each other yesterday—even after years apart—is something I will never take for granted.

As we continue walking our own paths, I’m sure we’ll each face new challenges and celebrate new successes.

I hope that when we gather again a few years from now, we’ll be able to look at one another and say,

“We’ve grown.”

Until then, I’ll keep giving my best to the work in front of me, while never forgetting the people who have walked beside me since the beginning.

Sometimes, all it takes is a day filled with laughter and meaningful conversations to remind us of what truly matters.

Friends like these are one of life’s greatest blessings.
